The Early Years
James Cook was born on November 7, 1728, in Marton, Yorkshire, England. He was one of seven children to a Scottish farm laborer, James Cook Sr., and his wife, Grace Pace. Cook’s father was a tenant farmer, which meant that he rented land from the local lord to cultivate crops for his own sustenance and small profit.
Growing up in rural North Yorkshire, Cook received only a basic education but showed an aptitude for mathematics and navigation. Death in Hawaii

It was during a visit ashore in Waimanu Valley near Kealakekua Bay where tensions eventually boiled over into full-blown conflict when local people seized food from their boats and even captured some sailors for an overnight stay. Tensions only rose further as more time passed without the food being released, followed by skirmishes leading to what ultimately became a violent confrontation in which Captain James Cook himself died.
